Sefeln - Where we Play Tolkien
Basic Stuff Fragments Phrases Verbs Nouns Numbers
For those who don't know, Sefeln is the language the Maraiths speak. Yes, it is a created language, inspired by French and Spanish. Words and structures are being constantly added to it, so if you'd like to help, just follow the link in the previous paragraph and post your idea. It is alright, and indeed, recommended to use/make some Maraith words, if you're applying to be a Choisir'ee.
Sp means Spanish, Fr French. Origins are in ( ), pronunciations in [ ]. Other notes: 'r's should be gently rolled, like in Spanish. Nouns are always capitalised, like in German. Apostrophes serve as very short pauses. Several endings are meant to be severely de-emphasised, but never completely swallowed. Nouns are not modified in plural form.
In past tense, the last syllable of a verb is simply dropped. So while "to perform Alaistheena" would be "quet Alaistheena", "performed Alaistheena" or "Alaistheena was performed" would be "Alaistheena que". Activa would be modified to activ, chante to chant(kant), and so on.
There are 21 hours in a Maraith day, and people sleep about six hours a day. These 21 heura are split into 7 parts of 3 heura each, and named, much in the way ancient Chinese (and probably other races) did. Maraiths count in what we'd call base seven. The names of the Descanvio allude to hair length -- Severity (baldness), Down (fuzz), Audacious (shoulder), Being (breast), Median (waist), Cusp (knee), Secede (ankle). As I said, yes, Maraiths take their hair very seriously. General sleeping times are during Severity and Down, which means Median is the peak of the Maraith day.

 Fragments
est [pronounced like it's spelled] -- functions like the French 'le', for masculine nouns. Calling any male the female equivalent of a changeable noun, or any female the male equivalent, is considered a mild insult unless initiated by the person involved. et [at] -- like the French 'la', for feminine nouns. As above. elle [EY-ley; second syllable very soft, almost non-existent] -- for plural nouns I ~ [ee, like Spanish Y] -- The ~ Used in place of est/et for people of lower education, or in cases when one is unsure of the noun article.(]Sp, el) E.g. I Margaro -- the bastard 'ee [ey] -- A member of/someone who E.g. Choisir'ee [sh(soft)-ua-z-air-ey]-- one who is chosen. 'a [ah] -- Of ~; used in conjunction with Names. E.g. Catalyn'a -- of the House of Catalyn 'u' [yu like the eu in eurythmics ] -- Of ; the noun directly after is NOT capitalised. Refer to example for use. (use very similar to the Japanese no) E.g. Chambre'u'rytme: Literally, room of rhythms. Arilda's Meditation Room, where she accesses the Conclave's core and trains her magic. ~o : feminine version of a noun E.g. Curansseuro -- female doctor non [no(r)-ng(v soft)] -- no (] entirely from French non, with the same meaning) alle [AH-lay, second syllable very soft] -- yes largo [LAR-go] -- literally, long of hair; a serious praise given to people of advanced age or standing in community, greatly respected and revered. Adjective. Use - The Priest is a true largo'u'mas! See how he loves our community! (]sp largo, long; music term largo, slow and dignified]Italian largo broad) masme [MAHS-may] -- simply/only motto [mou-toh] -- more, many, or much, depending on the context Lavca [ LAHV kah ] -- Sefeln swear word. Equivalent to "Damn!" or "Shit!" It's an anagram of 'calva', which is Spanish for bald. Thought it would be especially apt since the Choisir'ee are so fixated on their hair. Baldness must be anathema to them. Veach [VAY ahk ] -- This one is a little stronger. Comes from the French word for baldness.

 Phrases
Quet Masme [ cat MAHS-may ] -- phrase meaning "Just do it!" Unlike in English, where 'just' can also mean 'fair' in a legal/ethical/moral sense, the Sefeln Masme has only one meaning ie immediately/get on with it/simply. Theena'u'motto [DAY-nah oo motto] - A somewhat ominous proclaimation that before the day is over, the person this is uttered to will be thoroughly humiliated. Originally said to a group, as an act of defiance and boast that all in the group will be killed by the end of the day. [literally - much killing]

 Verbs
activa -- [ak-tiva] to activate - refer to [a href=choisiree.html]Activation[/a] chante -- [kan-tay] to sing quet -- [cat] to do, similar in use to the Japanese 'shiru' diamo [ dee AH moh ] -- means 'to shine'. Can be used to talk about jewels or can be applied to people who are doing well. Eg "I want to shine at this." Made up word; Jenn suggested 'diamond' at first so we settled on 'to shine'. ^.^

 Nouns
et Alais [ah-YAH] -- dance et Alaistheena [ah-YAH-day-nah] -- Part dance, part martial art, it is an ancient Maraith art form. The name is a composite of Alais (dance) and Theena(killing). I.e. it is the killing dance. It is said that Alaistheena started out as training for female warriors in Mara's ancient, very turbulent past and then slowly evolved into its present form. It makes practitioners stronger physically, as well as improves their balance and coordination. There are literally hundreds of movements, running the gamut from painfully slow (and I mean painfully in the literal sense. Imagine holding contorted poses that merge into other contorted poses really slowly) to breathtakingly fast. Alaistheena is danced to music, usually instrumental...although vocalizing is now accepted as well. It can be danced with or without props. Usual props include daggers -- in keeping with its martial origins -- chakrams and, for the master of the art, bells, so that the dancer can provide his own musical accompaniment. est Activation [ak-tiva-see-ohn] -- Refer to the [a href=choisiree.html]Choisir'ee info page[/a]. A ceremony undertaken by Maraith nobles regularly, to maintain their Evoquere (markings on their back). est Activateur [ak-tiva-tuhr/o] -- An occupation - the adept in charge of each Activation ceremony. est Cervio [chair-vio] -- deer-like animal native to Mara ( ] Sp ciervo / Fr cerf both deer) et Chambre [sham-bray] -- room (]Fr Chambre room) est Chantante [kan-tan-tay, or kan-tan-to {Chantanto} for the female variant] -- Singer (] Sp Cantante / Fr Chanteur) elle Conclave [con-clay-ve] -- Refer to the [a href=choisiree.html]Choisir'ee info page[/a], and [a href=arilda.html]Arilda's profile[/a]. est Curansseur [ku-rahn-zur]-- Healer/doctor (] Sp curar to cure / Fr gu¨¦risseur healer) est Descanvio [dairs-kan-vio] -- Interval of 3 heuras. There are seven Descanvios in a day. et Entente [en-ton(g)-tay] -- harmony (]Fr Entente) et Evi [ ey VEE ] -- female; gentle; smaller; life-giving. An anagram for the French word for life. elle Evoquere [air-vo-kair] -- marks on the backs of each noble Maraith. Refer to [a href=choisiree.html]Choisir'ee information[/a] for further details. est Heura [oy-ra, rolled r] -- hour (] Sp hora, Fr heure) et Margaro [mah-GAH-roh]-- bastard (] Margerelon, the bastard son of King Priam from Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida) est Masalgeux [mah-zal-gu] -- the male duality, Mas (mahz) for short. (]Fr rugueux, rough; Sp mas alto, taller) elle Qatero [KAHT-tey-roh] -- seven to the power of seven; an irregular noun that has the plural article, but may be used as if singular. (e.g. "Saying someone's earned their first Qatero is akin to someone on Earth making their first million.") elle Real Colure [ree-AHL koh-LOH-ray] -- Direct translation - royal colour. Can refer to either the garment colours (or flag, or arms) of a royal House, or eye colours, or the colouring elements used during Activation. Also used as a sarcastic remark by Maraiths who dislike a certain royal House. (e.g. "Walking around like they're so high and mighty, with their Real Colure.") et Rytme[rit-may] -- rhythm(]Sp ritmo rhythm) est Theena [day-nah] -- Killing
